Two improvements to our Children's Home were a priority for 2025

A special thanks to our Facilities Team for planning and managing two significant improvements to our Children’s Home: a new kitchen; and an enlarged septic system. Each improvement was sorely needed.

For some time we have been concerned that during heavy rains, uphill runoff from our Campus was flowing into the Home’s outdoor cooking area. A second concern was the septic tank was no longer sufficient. Since the septic and cooking area were in the same general space, 2025 seemed like the right time to prioritize each of these improvements.

The new Kitchen was added on the left side of Home.

The new kitchen will consist of two rooms. The front room is roofed, but only partially enclosed. The large windows permit the needed air movement to reduce the smoke and heat generated by the charcoal fires used to cook meals. The back room will be fully enclosed and used to store cooking utensils and other kitchen equipment. (We have a similarly sized room inside the Home that we use as a pantry.)

The back room of the Kitchen will be used for storage of kitchen utensils and supplies.

As mentioned, it was also very important to relocate the kitchen. By moving the kitchen from the right side of the Home to the left side, we freed up enough land to nearly double the septic’s size. We are hopeful this expansion will support us for quite some time.
